Named after the trees in its property, the Persimmon Tree House by Andre Simao Arquitectura is a traditional farmer’s home and cereal storage that was transformed into a contemporary residence in Barcelos, Portugal. From the main road, its facade — blank, almost windowless — betrays the modern reconstruction it underwent, as viewed from the home’s inner garden. The original stone masonry exists beside large glass windows, a harmonious blend of new and old that creates a fantastic, light-filled interior. White walls and warm wood tones contribute to its homey atmosphere; while on opposite sides of the home are two staircases: one leading to the private areas, and the other to a painting studio whose floor space juts out over the original structure.
