India-based firm A for Architecture converts the stilt space of an apartment building into an office space for an architectural firm, resulting in a unique homogeneous space that preserves the ‘as is’ elements of the 120 sq.m. space, while introducing pivotal design cues that enhances the living experience.
The office consists of three key elements. Grey Indian Patented Stone dominates the structure, lending to its homogeneity and giving a sense of weightiness that echoes the rock-cut cave temples found in its hometown of Nasik, India. Black basalt is used for the flooring of the entrance court and steps, while teak wood accents and furniture balances out and softens the rigid aesthetic.
To create a sense of consistency, the stilts were all evened out into uniform stone columns, while a series of skylights and roof slits allow natural light to come in, highlighting key areas and creating a dynamic mood that changes along with the seasons.
A water court and indoor plants blend with the rock and wood, which along with the varying ceiling heights creates a stunning natural space that evokes the creativity and inspiration that drives the architectural practice. Follow them on Instagram.
