Following her blockbuster show at the Met, Rei Kawakubo is set to present a new range of creations this year. Rather than clothes, Kawakubo’s collection of furniture will grace the spaces at Parisian museum Galerie A1043. Comprising 15 pieces, only ever produced in limited quantities, the show entitled The Furniture of Rei Kawakubo gives the chance to see a new aspect of the designer’s oeuvre.
Created as an “extension of the fixtures” in Comme des Garcons stores, the furniture was a means of instilling the varied retail spaces with a continuation of the vision Kawakubo lends her clothes and provides the first opportunity to see the eclectic set presented in one location. Featuring screens, tables and chairs constructed in a range of brutalist, industrial styles, the pieces were made between 1983 and 1993. The exhibition is open to the public until 22 December 2017.
