Archival photos come alive in Hungarian filmmaker/artist Bill Domonkos‘ surreal GIF animations. Using footage and pictures that are in the public domain, Domonkos incorporates a loop of motion into each photo which will have you mesmerized and slightly spooked.
Domonkos’ animations range from poetic (forest scenes playing in a woman’s beehive), amusing (a cat staring at a floating pair of scissors) to downright disturbing (two women with batteries for heads). GIFs are considered lo-fi, but we’re left awestruck by his work, which hover between the past and the future. Domonkos says: “I am interested in the poetics of time and space– to renew and transform materials, experiences and ideas. The extraordinary thing about cinema is its ability to suggest the ineffable – it is this elusive, dreamlike quality that informs my work.”
