Young Projects’ Six Square House Deconstructs the Traditional Farmhouse

Architecture studio Young Projects embed a contemporary home of six adjoining volumes in the middle of a 2-acre property in Bridgehampton, New York. The Six Square House becomes the new primary residence of its owners, who had outgrown the historic 1850 farmhouse in the same lot which they previously occupied; the old farmhouse takes on the new role of a guesthouse for visiting family and friends.

Six Square House is Young Projects’ radical, deconstructed take on a traditional barn. It is composed of six 24’x24’ gabled modules that intersect at various points, all of which congregate around a central triangular courtyard. At its center, the open-plan living, kitchen and dining areas flow along a continuous ruled ceiling geometry, branching off to the two bedrooms and three baths that make up the rest of the home.

Large windows and openings frame different views of the property depending on where one stands; the bedrooms, for instance, look out at gnarled trees that also offer privacy, while the social spaces open directly to the spaces for entertaining: the central courtyard, polished concrete patios, gardens and the pool house.

In contrast to the white-walled, light-colored wood-floored interiors, Six Square House’s slatted exteriors are made from low-maintenance, highly durable Accoya wood, charred and stained to achieve a deep gray color. The dynamic gabled rooftops dip and rise in an undulating movement which, taken in together with the façades, result in an ambiguous architecture that speaks volumes about the studio’s penchant for playing with geometry, pattern, texture and spatial complexity.

Speaking more of the project, the studio note, “On one hand, the design of the house is governed by its own geometric logic; on the other, the design reframes and connects back to the overall site.” Follow Young Projects on on Instagram.
