When the client engaged VPA Architects to discuss the potential of building a home on a recently purchased plot of land in the up-and-coming suburb of Ahmedabad, India, it was the preservation of the trees and shrubs that became of primary concern as initial conversations turned into first plans.
Since it was the proliferation of bamboo and cherry blossom trees on the borders, and the chickoo and mango trees throughout the plot that had made the client fall in love with the parcel of land, the footprint of the home had to work with the topiary. Hence the Foliage House, a home split into two masses that puts the kitchen and dining area on one side and the living and sleeping areas on the other, each laid out to take in the best views of the surrounding gardens. The highlight of this acquiescence to nature, is the beautiful corner living room, whose dual walls of floor to ceiling windows create a space at one with the garden. Washed in a chalky rose, even the exterior color elevates the vivid greens of the leafy vegetation around the home.
