North Yorkshire’s Beck Farm & Studio has gone through various iterations over the years. Today, in addition to the residential program, it now serves as an artist’s studio and office space—quite a departure from its working farm roots. Vine Architecture Studio, informed by local rural architecture, helmed the renovation and restoration of the existing farmhouse and masonry barns, replacing them with sleeker volumes. An added extension also marked a new chapter in the farmstead’s history.
Taking advantage of the remoteness and privacy of the site, the entire ground floor of the farmhouse features glazed facades that offer the living area panoramic views of the beck and the landscape beyond. Sunlight pours in from narrow, half-roof-half-facade skylights that punctuate the upper part of the farmhouse—a small but striking detail that adds a modern touch to its traditional agricultural silhouette. The bedrooms carry on the farmhouse charm with low-slung, sloping ceilings and nature-inspired wallpaper and decor.
Resourcefulness and sustainability were important factors in the renovation, which the studio implemented through heating drawn from ground source heat pumps and the use of reclaimed stone and larch materials for the extension.
Three distinctive garden spaces dot the home, each offering different characters and views. A formal garden sits between the main house and art studios, while smaller, more private gardens branch off from these structures.
