In Submerged, artist Timur Akhriev explores the hidden depths and feelings of his friends, who posed for him during intense painting sessions — even if it meant being submerged in milk. A complex task, yes, but Akhriev pulls it off beautifully in a series of hauntingly melancholic tableaus where the subjects, gazing intently at us, convey mountains of emotion with one look.
“The milk isolates their features, revealing their inner selves through changes in skin tone and colours of the body,” explains the artist. “Even the slightest changes, the smallest highlights on the surface of the face, reveals something underneath.”
