An exceptional lakeside home with gorgeous views of Whistler, Canada’s Alta Lake and the mountain range beyond, The Rock by London-based studio Gort Scott offers a sense of intimacy despite its sprawling floor space.
Set upon the rocky mountainside, the studio carefully studied and worked around the contours and nuances of the site’s plot, producing a four-level home where the living and private spaces come into contact with the natural landscape, be it topographically or visually. “The design evolved from a sensitive site analysis involving deep appreciation of the site’s natural beauty, which was explored at the outset through time spent on site in different weather conditions and times of the day; sketching and observing the changing light,” the studio explains.
Forest views are enjoyed from the second floor, an open-plan level hosting the kitchen and dining areas, as well as a spacious living space that converges around a modern fireplace. The master suite, situated at the topmost level, enjoys a 360 degree panorama; while a cinema room, gym and wine cave occupy a subterranean volume, carved into the rock. The interiors are dressed in a restrained palette of materials and color, dominated by subdued browns, blacks and grays of concrete, timber and aluminium. Next to a guest house situated near the home’s entrance is an infinity pool where one can soak in both the sun and views that surround this fantastic dwelling. The home was completed in 2018.
