Set in upstate New York in the heart of Hudson Valley’s lush landscape, the M Residence updates a tired 1980s home with a refurb that brings a luxe mid-century look to the new retreat. Architecture studio TAKATINA was enlisted by a creative couple to renovate and expand the property, delivering a balance of rustic charm with modern luxury. The project aimed to create a tranquil sanctuary, balancing the structure’s original character with refined, contemporary touches.
Preserving the exposed wood framing of the ground floor, TAKATINA introduced rich textures and a warm palette throughout the home. Reclaimed century-old terracotta tiles (with underfloor heating) bring tactile warmth underfoot, while soft, white walls complement the restored wood ceilings. Continuous ribbon windows capture and soften daylight, filling the home with a natural glow. At the center of the living space is a twelve-foot-long island crafted from honey-stained rift-cut oak with a limestone countertop, anchoring the room.
With rustic style and sleek modernity, the M Residence combines the architectural vision of a retreat that respects its heritage yet embraces the refined needs of its residents.
