Peel Saver is a project that turns potato peel waste into ecological street food packaging. Created by Italian designers Simone Caronni, Paolo Stefano Gentile and Pietro Gaeli for their Sustainable Design/Materials course at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, the concept makes use of the starch and fibre components in potato peels. Bonded and hardened to form a cone, the resulting material ironically becomes the perfect container for fries. Made completely out of production waste and being 100% biodegradable, it can also end up as animal food or as plant fertilizer.
“Peel Saver shows a different point of view, a return to simplicity and to what nature has already designed for us,” the designers state. “Today it now a necessity that products and packaging are sustainable and recyclable, this project is proof of how much can still be done in this direction.” Hoping to launch the project as a large-scale production, the designers are looking into collaborations with companies that can fully realise Peel Saver’s potential.
