For Petra Leary, things are more interesting from above. The New Zealand-based creative has cemented her reputation as one of the most sought-out aerial photographers in the field, with numerous international awards, accolades and ambassadorships with brands under her belt to prove it. It’s the composition and colors that jump out at us: her clean lines and vibrant tones, accentuated at post-production, are aesthetic constants in her work.
Making up her portfolio are varying subjects that include sports terrains, snaking highways, landscapes and immense coastlines, but she also touches on the conceptual. In a campaign shoot for the umbrella brand BLUNT, she documents the delightful patterns and geometry of the umbrellas and their shadows on the ground. Her unique perspective highlights the products’ selling point: their signature flowy edges and punchy colors. Behind the carefree, playful imagery lies an innate understanding of detail, balance and composition, as well as technical skills honed over experience.
