Paul Graham is a British fine art and documentary photographer who has shown exhibitions at the Whitechapel Gallery, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, and Germany’s Museum Folkwang. He has published three monographs, with his latest release, A1 The Great North Road, an updated edition of the 1983 original set to be published by Mack Books. Having self-published the book on its initial release – a decision in part due to the dearth of publishing houses or galleries interested in photographic monographs at the time – Graham’s evocative series of images of the Great North Road finally receive their deserved attention.
Travelling up and down England and into Scotland, Graham captured life on the road in all its humdrum glory. From the roadside cafes to the bus stop loiterers, gas stations to green fields of England visible from the roadside, the images offer a glimpse into the world of Thatcher’s Britain amid declining industry and social upheaval. Published by MACK Books, A1 The Great North Road by Paul Graham is available here.
