In Epsom, Surrey, the Hipped House is a 1920s detached house transformed by Oliver Leech Architects to adapt to a young family’s need for a spacious and open home suited to their active lifestyle. Interior renovations and a new two-storey volume with a pitched hipped roof were worked into the original home to accommodate this request, with the studio opening up the existing ground floor into one flexible living and kitchen space, and moving the parental suite into the new extension.
A muted material palette of silvery Siberian larch cladding and handmade Danish grey clay tiles — a departure from the area’s commonly-used red tile — visually set the extension apart from its original street-facing façade. The minimalist aesthetic continues indoors where light-toned wood, light gray floors and white walls become a sophisticated backdrop to the family’s daily activities. Two courtyards, an outdoor and exterior one, constantly connect the dwellers to the property’s landscape, while dormer windows and skylights fill the home with natural light.
With its contemporary yet restrained silhouette, Oliver Leech delivers an impressionable family home that achieves the perfect balance between the old and the new.
