Space constraints and small plots are some of the greatest challenges that architects both love and hate. Presented with a long and narrow area to work with in Brazil’s capital of Sao Paulo, we can say that the studio Terra e Tuma Arquitetos Associados pulled off the challenge quite successfully with Mipibu House.
The 170 square meter property called for verticality, given its close proximity to the properties flanking both sides. Though constricting, the inside of the home provides its inhabitants space to breathe thanks to a plant-filled inner courtyard and a top floor terrace that function as outside areas, allowing light and ventilation to circulate around the home. The bedrooms, on the request of the client, were placed on the ground floor for greater privacy and silence, while the social areas were appointed to the upper floors, with access to the open deck. Mipibu House was completed in 2015.
