Marimekko designer illustrates Virginia Woolf book covers

Helsinki-based illustrator Aino-Maija Metsola, designer for Finnish design company Marimekko since 2006, gives Virginia Woolf novels a whole new spectrum of color, design-wise.

Known for her interest in color and patterns, Metsola’s bright illustrations grace the front covers of Vintage Classics’ paperback reissues of Virginia Woolf – a cheerful contrast to the novelist’s heavy, intense plots.

Metsola uses her signature medium of watercolor for the covers, her sure-handed strokes and abstract compositions guaranteed to jump out at you from the shelves. The newly-illustrated editions, which include the titles A Room of One’s Own, To The Lighthouse, The Waves, The Years, Mrs Dalloway, and Orlando, come out this October 6th.
