The said bond between twins will always be incomprehensible to the majority of us born without a plus-one. Identical twins are as fascinating as they come, and award-winning photographer Peter Zelewski allows us to marvel and stare at their striking sameness to our heart’s content — without being rude — in his new work, Alike But Not Alike.
As expected, his portraits come with intriguing stories. Hermon and Heroda, for example, simultaneously lost their hearing at the age of seven, while Sophie and Polly are so identical that their fingerprints match perfectly.
Beyond their matching clothes and neutral expressions, Zelewski’s portraits invite us to seek not just their similarities, but their differences as well. Scrutinising them up close, we start noticing – to our relief – subtle variations in their facial expressions, posture and body languages: proof that no two people are truly identical.
