In dense wooded landscape, iHouse Estudio recently completed Casa Flor, a contemplative pavilion that sits alongside the client’s existing home in Punta Ballena, Uruguay. The project was born out of the client’s desire to add a reflective hideaway on an adjoining plot, close enough to the main house that it’s not inconvenient but with enough distance to retreat.
Designed to blur the boundaries between interior and exterior, the single rectangular volume is composed of three zones arranged along its length. At the street-facing end, service areas sit behind an opaque façade that hides them away. The central social area opens on both sides via an arrangement of sliding exterior panels, allowing the living space to fully integrate with the outdoors. At the rear, the sleeping area offers an intimate link to the surroundings, its double bed positioned between solid walls and looking out through a floor-to-ceiling glass wall that provides a sense of immersion in the trees beyond.
The structure was prefabricated off site before being carefully assembled on location while the client continued to live in the neighboring main residence, the process leaving a light touch with the terrain undisturbed. Rather than imposing itself on the landscape, Casa Flor settles gently, adding a comfortable, contemporary retreat from which to enjoy and inhabit the natural surroundings.
