Sited on the edge of Puerta Escondido, Oaxaca’s buzzy port town renowned for its nightlife and surfing beaches, the ambitious Hotel Terrestre opened its doors in February 2022. The hotel was designed by Mexican office Taller de Arquitectura, directed by Alberto Kalach, and plans to rely solely on solar energy to power its output. Within a framework of seven beautifully rendered brick buildings, 14 interconnected villas make up the luxury accommodation. Each residence has its own private pool with a terrace and views out over the abundant tropical forest.
The entire project was built using locally sourced materials to minimise its carbon footprint, with a desire for continued sustainability in its operation a key facet in the design. Brick, clay, and wood were used on the exterior, while sand and clay complement large wood-framed windows within the suites. An angular, immensely solid looking edifice that crops up from the lush flora like the remains of a perfectly preserved forgotten city, Hotel Terrestre is a surprising addition to the landscape that intends to use its sustainable credentials to exist in harmony with the environment for the long haul.
