French designer Olympia Le-Tan brings literature and fashion together in the form of these charming geek-chic hand-embroidered clutches which resemble vintage book covers.
Inspired by the book collection of her father, illustrator Pierre Le-Tan, Olympia’s creations make us yearn for a time when people actually carried books around instead of smartphones. Her first collection debuted in 2009’s Paris Fashion Week, and have since then been sought out and coveted by a captive following. Le-Tan uses liberty felt, silk thread and felt appliqués for her clutches, and all are handmade in her Parisian studio. Most of her creations’ covers are first editions. How vintage is that? But aside from her moody book covers (Le-Tan tends to feature dark, broody titles such as Catcher in the Rye or Lord of the Flies), she’s embroidered other genres as well: cookbooks, Disney classics and magazine covers, and cd covers. Her 2016 collection’s theme revolves around Japan, where she lived for some time.
Sure, they’re a bit pricey at €1,240 (around $1,400), but when you know that only twelve of the same kind were made, it’s definitely worth the splurge.
