From afar, it’s as if the parts of Joyce Lin’s Exploded Chair are trying to get away from each other, but can’t because of some unseen force. Closer inspection reveals that each piece is actually contained in clear boxes, giving the illusion of movement and magic. The cheeky design displays Lin’s views of sculptures and objects “as a mode of exploration and play”, and how ideas of interconnectivity and isolation greatly influence her work.
Because of its bulky size, the Exploded Chair leans more towards ‘conceptual art’ than ‘functional furniture’ – perhaps until the Exploded Table comes along…
