For their art collector client in Nagano, Japanese architecture studio Assistant designed and built “It is a Garden”, a one-level structure dotted with five courtyards, three of which feature gardens lush with plants and trees. “Its shape being flat and square, the house has a floor plan entirely defined by five courtyards alone,” state the architects.

The rooms, all designed to face a courtyard, are awash in light during different times of the day. The substantial use of glass around the house also opens up the home to nature, highlighting its exceptional woodland location. Paired with tasteful decorations in subdued palettes, it’s easy to see how the entire home indulges its visitors in peace and relaxation.
