The geometrically unique Round House, one of the few circular-shaped homes that emerged in California in the 60s, received a contemporary remodel by Feldman Architecture, who stayed true to a respectful enrichment of the home’s original structure.
The home sits high on its Los Altos Hills perch, affording its residents 180-degree views of its surroundings. Its former open-air central courtyard was transformed by the studio into a kitchen — its circular kitchen island is now the heart of the home, perfectly appropriate for a family of food enthusiasts.
A wrap-around walkway leads a circular progression through the rest of the home – from the open-plan kitchen, living and dining areas, and finally to the pie-shaped rooms that carefully demarcate the private from public space. Natural light filters in through large glazing and the skylight over the kitchen, and opens up to the property’s lawn and backyard areas.
At the intersection of the living room, an outdoor deck fronts views of the South Bay landscape. In contrast to the all-white interior palette, Round House’s façades feature blackened wood Shou Sugi Ban siding, making it stand out from the scenic hillside setting.
