Turkish architecture and interior practice Erdem Hamza Architecture renovate the interiors of the Alaçati Stone House to match the charm of its 130-year-old structure and façade.
Located in Izmir Alaçati in Turkey, the building was used for olive oil and gum tree resin extraction, its stone walls still bearing old traces of the structure. The rectangular floor plan flows smoothly from one room to the next, with each of the two levels opening up to an outdoor space in the form of balconies and terraces.
The typical order of spaces is reversed, with the bedrooms and kitchen situated on the ground floor and the dining and living areas on the higher level, offering a view of the gardens below. The color and material palette of the exteriors are mirrored inside, that of elegant arched doorways and windowsills, heavy wooden accents, wood beam ceilings and exposed stone walls. These details coexist with newer elements brought in by the studio to meet the modern living standards of its inhabitants, as well the bespoke furnishings prepared specifically for the home.
The convivial outdoor patio and gardens culminate with a long and narrow lap pool. Amidst the palm trees and gumtree plants that are reminders of its past, the Alaçati Stone House is the picture of a restful and relaxing environment that proudly flaunts its 130-year-old identity, keeping with the studio’s penchant for blending elements from different historical periods and playing with the element of the unexpected.
