destilat studio was tasked to revitalise the Gut Wagram estate, which sits on a 4000-square meter property in Lower Austria’s Weinviertel. The studio, known for its holistic approach to architectural concepts, applied its distinctive style in the revival of the estate’s interiors by modernising its forms and functions while staying true to the authentic construction materials and handcrafted techniques.
Traditional elements like the antique herringbone-patterned parquet, stone floors, tumbled travertine tiles and restored box windows contrast with clean white walls and a comprehensive modern lighting system. The main staircase received a new bannister inspired by a historically accurate design. The exteriors were also spruced up with a new plaza design, cladding, and a planting plan for the castle’s garden – a collaboration between the studio and a landscape designer.
The entire project ties in beautifully with the studio’s ethos. “There is no such thing as past, present or future – what counts is what you are out of it,” they say. “Design is a process without beginning or end, a vast area of curiosity, a depository of ideas. This creative surrounding is the space we inhabit, roaming somewhere between the old and the new.”
