In Montana, CLB Architects‘ RCR Compound is a space designed for discerning art collector clients and their extensive collection. Sitting between contrasting landscapes—a forested butte and open meadow—the residents get to experience views of the woods and the valley.
The house unfolds in a series of connected buildings, with tapering rooflines that echo the surrounding terrain. Meanwhile, living spaces hover over the meadow, capturing views of the mountains and inviting warm southern light into the interiors. A dramatic cantilevered porch extends the spaces outdoors to foster seamless indoor-outdoor living. In contrast, the library nestles intimately against the butte.
The master bedroom is housed in a separate pavilion while remaining connected by an elegant glass bridge that overlooks an aspen grove and the private pool. Enveloped in a materials palette of ledger-cut Montana sandstone, clear cedar, and oxidized steel, the home speaks to the regional vernacular. Wood is prominently used inside as well, punctuated with white walls, modern furnishings, and the large artworks that grace the walls. More projects by CLB Architects.
