California House is a dwelling designed by New York City practice Gluck+, built on a steep slope long considered unbuildable to offer its residents what could only be described as The View: a panorama of the city below, the surrounding mountains, and the iconic Hollywood sign landmark, all framed through the home’s floor-to-ceiling glass façades.
Topping the spectacular home is a sculptural roof supported on slender columns. The wide, parasol-like roof extends beyond the house’s façades, creating dramatic overhangs and shaded outdoor areas that wrap around the home. The home is composed of two levels, with its lower burrowed partially into the hillside, the resulting plinth allowing an upper level to be built.
The lower floor welcomes four bedrooms, six bathrooms, home offices and a home theatre while the upper level is the appointed social area, where the family gathers for cooking, eating and entertaining. Sliding glass doors open up to a swimming pool, a sprawling lawn and lush gardens.
“Everything here is configured to maintain the simplicity and openness of the space,” the architecture studio says. With most of its floor space set underground, the home meets some of the strictest efficiency standards in the US.
