Built for a renowned film director and spouse transitioning from Hollywood to a quieter life reminiscent of their Montreal roots, Steeplechase House represents a reunion between client and studio Brooks + Scarpa, who collaborated on an award-winning office space 25 years ago.
Set on 65 acres of preserved woodland near Durham, North Carolina, this glass pavilion features two distinct gabled volumes rising 31 feet high, connected by a transparent gallery that serves as a transitional space between the social and private areas. The design emphasizes a seamless indoor-outdoor connection through extensive glazing and thoughtful positioning within the landscape.
“The residence’s innovative reinterpretation of traditional gable roof forms, prevalent in the region, further demonstrates a commitment to design excellence,” says Brooks + Scarpa. “By blending these traditional elements with modern design principles, the residence creates a unique visual language that speaks to both heritage and innovation.”
The structure’s reflective glass and black metal exterior changes character with the seasons – disappearing into summer foliage, and standing out against winter’s bare trees. The project demonstrates exceptional environmental sensitivity, preserving 98% of the existing site while incorporating sustainable features and natural materials throughout.
