Built on a dune adjacent to Cape Cod National Seashore in Provincetown, Massachusetts is the residence Copperdrifts, designed by Charles Rose Architects for an artist and a personal trainer couple. Presented as a series of interconnected volumes standing horizontally and vertically along the sloping landscape, the dwelling embraces the site’s topography while commanding breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean across different elevations.
“The way the house is sited along the ridge of the dune not only presents opportunities for the best views, but also preserves one of the many kettle bowls native to the Outer Cape and its unique geology,” says the studio.
Two primary volumes slide past one another, connected by a central stair core. Inside, the conventional spaces like the living room, dining, kitchen, and bedrooms are joined by a light-filled studio, a fully-equipped gym, and a dedicated office space. A poolside kitchen, a fire pit, a screened porch, and a spectacular roof deck that functions as an open-air living room make up the recreational outdoor spaces that are perfect for entertaining.
The materials palette was chosen for its aesthetics and practicality. Flat-lock copper panels, cedar siding, and concrete were selected for both their raw beauty and durability in the face of Cape Cod’s notoriously harsh, salt-laden coastal winds. In time, the materials will weather and patina, allowing the structure to gradually blend with its natural surroundings. More from Charles Rose Architects.
