On a mission to creatively reclaim disused land, architect Benjamin Hall Design designed a compact family home to discreetly nestle into the back of a suburban block near downtown Phoenix. The studio described its efforts as “stealthy architecture”, the low-profile, yet impactful building finding space amidst the urban landscape. Inspired to create a home that blended desert environmentalism with Scandinavian efficiency and style, the architects implemented classic building traditions alongside minimalist, detail-driven interiors that elevate the use of simple materials.
Materiality plays a crucial role in the project; concrete floors were left bare and finished with a hard-troweled, clear-sealed finish for durability; floor-to-ceiling white birch cabinetry adds warmth; white Corian defines the kitchen and bathroom (a solid choice for longevity); and concrete block walls cool efficiently while adding to an unfussy aesthetic. Elsewhere, the architects embraced mass production, customizing IKEA fixtures and furnishings to achieve bespoke aesthetics on a budget. A blend of efficiency, sustainability, and local identity, the Hideaway on Palm house is a stylish update of the traditional Desert Modern home.
Benjamin Hall Design was founded in 2011. They are committed to the lost profession of Master Builder, one who carries out both design and construction tasks. “This unique approach provides us valuable insight in order to achieve high quality craftsmanship with a budget conscious mindset,” says the studio.
