Without straying too far from one of nature’s handiest seating options, artist Austin Lee merges art and function to create his own update on the simple ‘stump.’ The New York artist’s collaboration with Case Studyo is a playful exploration of the simple function of the stump, updated in this case with tripod-like legs and a soft, squidgy base on which to park one’s derriere – or feet, or whatever the owner is looking to rest.
Lee’s work is filled with otherworldly images that blur the boundaries between fantasy and reality, so it figures that his foray into furniture follows a fairy-tale theme somewhat. Built from a combination of reinforced fibreglass, rubber coating, and a soft foam top, the Stump is available in three bright colors – red, blue, and yellow – that are bound to emphasise the sculptural qualities of this conversation piece.
