In Hong Kong, no other place embodied the term “concrete jungle” more fittingly than Kowloon Walled City, a myriad of houses stacked on top of each other which was notorious for prostitution, drug use and crime. Once considered the densest place on earth, it was finally torn down in the 1990s. Drawing inspiration from the demolished megastructure, photographer Andy Yeung captures similarly striking housing complexes that continue to exist in Hong Kong in his photo series titled Walled City.
“This striking feature of the Hong Kong landscape wasn’t completely wiped away,” says Yeung. “Part of it still exists in many current high density and ‘enclosed’ housing apartments where the only view out of the window is the neighbour’s window. I hope this series can get people to think about claustrophobic living in Hong Kong from a new perspective.”
