When Isla Architects were brought on board for a new project on the island of Mallorca the client was ready and waiting with the green light to build. Together with Lisbon-based architecture studio Fidalgo Magro, they were tasked with moving quickly and the first thing to think about was injecting a sense of modernity into a new family home while working around a planning decision that insisted on keeping previously existing interconnecting buildings. A decision was made to incorporate a contemporary abstract design on one side of the home while sticking to traditional Mediterranean style on the other. The result is a balanced home that knots together well with smooth, sleek, rustic and rough exteriors playing off each other as if miming the soft skyline that breaks above the rugged mountains visible form the home.
The footprint of four separate buildings became an attractive way to divide the home, with the final layout able to either offer large, interconnecting volumes, or be shut off to create two separate, private quarters. Mediterranean elements evoke the spirit of architectural tradition on the island, with beautiful wooden coffered ceilings in the main living/dining area, a terrazzo floor, and local rocks and stones used on the façade to elevate the locally supplied pre-fab concrete.
