CY-BO is a smart, sustainable packaging solution conceptualized by Japanese industrial designer Kenji Abe to help reduce single-use plastics from our daily routines. Individual snowflake-shaped, sponge-like pieces can be slotted together, its design allowing users to manipulate them into different forms for various purposes. With its high-cushioning properties and water and heat resistant material, CY-BO can be decorative as well as functional: the pieces can easily be constructed into fruit packing foam, baskets, cubes and cases, coasters, table mats or even lampshades.
“It is a new packaging material that can be used depending on one’s ideas,” Abe says about the project. “Because in order to reduce discarded plastic, it’s necessary to make packing materials that can be reused as many times as possible.”
CY-BO was a finalist in 2018’s Kokuyo Design Awards. More amazing examples below, and follow Kenji’s work on his website and Instagram.
