When he’s not creating content for clients likes the BBC, Samsung and the Sunday Times, photographer Charlie Clift spends his time indulging his passion for storytelling, with his personal projects that focus on anything from the lives of British emigrants to the inner workings of the world of the circus. In his latest series, A Portrait of Brixton, Clift celebrates the characters who contribute to the South London neighborhood’s inimitable charm.
Armed with a camera, lighting and a grey screen, the street becomes home to his portable studio with subjects picked up at random to pose for the project. Explaining the series, Clift says, “For this project I wanted to capture people on my home turf, in Brixton. I love it here, the area around the station and market is always full of life, people from all different lifestyles and backgrounds rush past each other. They play music, shout, dance, talk on their phones, take selfies, go shopping, argue and love. One minute a reggae artist is rapping at you, and the next a lady is proudly proclaiming she’s 82. All of life is on display here. So I photographed it.”
