In Vancouver, the Sea Ranch House draws parallels to Northern California’s coastal architecture, kindling a strong connection to nature from its perch on a lush forested private lot in the sought-out Caulfield neighbourhood.
Stuart Howard designed the home in 1975, influenced by Sea Ranch: a California-born planned community that started in the 60s, which stretched ten miles along the coast of California. It was Howard’s first home done independently.
Mirroring the Sea Ranch community’s distinctive timber frame structures, the Canadian dwelling features dramatic sloped shed roofs and three split levels that accommodate three bedrooms and two baths. Skylights and glass panels, stretching vertically to highlight the volume, are angled strategically towards the forest, sky, and ocean; multiple terraces bring residents even closer to nature.
