For those that last visited a swimming pool during school, memories are conjured up of swimming classes in halls filled with the smell of chlorine.
And then along comes a photographer who manages to make you yearn for those swimming pools of yesterday — Brooklyn-based photographer Franck Bohbot has captured the seemingly mundane and unassuming swimming pools of Paris, giving them a sense of grandeur and monumentalism. Says Bohbot in an interview with Portable.tv:
“It’s interesting that we always focus on famous monuments in history books and education, and don’t focus on places where people from the city or neighborhood go everyday. I aim to “monumentalize” the common places where people go. Swimming pools remind me of childishness and competition, but, photographed in this way, they are quiet and timeless buildings.”
After featuring the swimming pools of France, Bohbot plans to photograph the swimming pools of Brooklyn, New York in the second part of his series. Hopefully it arrives just in time for summer.
