Heralded as one of the up-and-coming stars in the Greek design scene, Stamos Michael stands out as a multi-disciplined artisan, delving into interior architecture and furniture design while operating Grace, an artist-run gallery in Athens. His latest project Esperinos, a contemporary design-focused guesthouse, is a stunning display of his unique set of skills.
This single-storey residence, situated in the city’s Filipappos Hill area, was literally stripped down, its traditional layout transformed into an open, gallery-style interior. Michael then set to work in making the guest house a symbol of Athens’ collective design influences by showcasing a mix of different styles – “A new way of experiencing the cultural universe of Athens,” he notes.
Within the moss green and plum-purple walls, works from homegrown artists can be seen in every room of the house — all featured work from the gallery he co-founded. Furniture of his own design adorn the living area, while the private outdoor garden offers a social space reminiscent of Greek culture, an ode to the people’s communal openness.
The masterpieces in the guest house rotate in and out, giving the guests an ever-changing preview of Athens’ local art, as it sets itself to be one of the world’s emerging creative hubs — much like the designer himself.
