Against the stunning landscape of the picturesque Paarl-Franschhoek Valley in South Africa stands Winelands Villa, architecture studio SAOTA and interior design practice ARRCC‘s contemporary take on local architectural traditions. With its exposed timber rafters, timber cladding, and natural stonework juxtaposed against crisp white plastered walls, this is a home that spoils its residents with views of the Drakenstein, Simonsberg, and Paarl Rock Mountains from carefully angled openings.
A dramatic, double-height pivoting wood-slatted door at the entrance of the home sets the tone for the elegant unfolding spaces awaiting its visitors. Though the original brief initially called for an H-shaped build, the studios opted for a cruciform arrangement of five overlapping squares, putting the living and dining area at its center with bedrooms branching out from its four corners. This geometric approach not only maximized views but also produced a series of sheltered terraces, courtyards, and intimate green pockets accessible via sliding doors.
Volumes stretch upwards, with soaring double-height ceilings connecting with views of the surrounding meadows and mountains. These soaring heights are balanced by rooms with lower ceilings, creating a dynamic unfolding of spaces across an open plan, segueing from grandeur to coziness.
Materiality plays an important role in defining the villa’s aesthetic. A hand-chiseled sandstone plinth anchors the fireplace to the living room, its raw texture complemented by timber and screed floors. Rustic elements appear in the form of timber-clad roof beams with asymmetrical details. The kitchen is elegantly lined with bespoke wood casework.
The outdoor areas evoke a resort vibe. A floating island hovers over the swimming pool, protected overhead by a canopy that folds down for shelter and privacy. In the master suite, the en-suite bathroom commits to the home’s overall theme of connecting with nature, offering sightlines to the outdoors while maintaining a sense of sanctuary.
Responding to the site, the climate, and the client’s needs, the studios deliver a uniquely expressive home that sets a standard for luxury living in the South African winelands.
