Designed with the entirety of the plot in mind, this smart home in Akishima, Japan leans on its own foundations in illuminating an interior layout that can bend and shift with the way inhabitants desire to live down the years. Created by Office M-Sa, the home relies on a thoughtful layout of concrete foundational structures that both support structurally and provide an organic aesthetic within the home, protruding, sculpturally inside.
Timber walls and ceilings provide the balance to the utilitarian element of the concrete, fixed in a way that allows them to be relatively easily rearranged in the future in case of diversification of living arrangements. Take away the timber and the concrete frame foundations remain, guiding possibilities with a new layout but never truly limiting what can be achieved. The House in Akishima is representative of a grand architectural plan that both provides a liveable home for today, while catering to the future.
