The laundromat is hardly the most inspiring place to spend your time – unless your neighborhood has a retro washer palace like one of these – which is why artist Yinka Ilori and LEGO’s new collaborative installation was such a great example of vibrant creative expression. Named ‘Launderette of Dreams’ the space was inspired by Ilori’s own childhood, when he would sometimes visit the launderette after school where he would dream about all the things he wanted to create – the mundanity of the space encouraging his imagination to run wild.
Despite its simplicity, the launderette was a gathering point for the community, a place where kids might meet and it’s this point that the award-winning artist has developed in tandem with LEGO. The space is awash with color, with hopscotch patterns on the floor and washing machines filled with LEGO blocks for kids to build with. If only all laundromats could be this imaginative.
