Floating on the open seas, stuck in their own realm, the Italian ferries in the series of photographer Allegra Martin are a study of introspective reflection and the suspension of time. Entitled A Bordo or On Board, Martin’s project focuses on the design details and interior qualities of Italian ferries, their patterned carpets, polished decks, and mirrored portholes dominating photos in which the passengers seem are foreign entities in the very waiting areas they should be filling, relaxing or killing time. Absent of people, the photos seize on the emptiness of the interiors, allowing the kitsch furnishings and chintzy finishes to become the characters.
Taken on board ferries that travel a route between Corsica and Sardinia, Martin’s photo essay is the result of a decade’s worth of watching the ships sail the waves. A Bordo, a photographic portfolio by Allegra Martin curated by Anticàmera, is on show until September 2018.
