A chair created to accommodate hours of contemplation and rumination in comfort, Shook is the first in a series of lounge chairs by New York-based designer Imaan Sattar. Seeking inspiration from the repetitive nature of an obsessive mindset, Sattar took the liberty of reinterpreting the traditional chair’s ladder back by multiplying this single component to the excess, giving off the impression of a visual glitch. Its unique structure allows users to settle back into the furniture, providing elements at different heights to comfortably rest one’s elbows, neck, chin or cheeks against. “This project narrates the control our fundamentally obsessive predispositions have over us,” the designer says. Shook is handcrafted from walnut and cotton using traditional shaker techniques.
Sattar’s work explores and addresses design hindrances that restrict humans from living their best lives to the fullest. A native of Pakistan, she is currently studying Industrial Design at Pratt Institute. More of her work on her website and Instagram.
