HGX Design loosely reinterpreted the humble agricultural building with their project Hudson Valley Residence II, a sprawling glass-and-wood paneled home in Germantown, New York, that enjoys a prime elevation on a ridge overlooking the Catskill Mountains.
Spread across a single narrow level, the living space is enclosed by floor-to-ceiling glass walls that visually blur the line between indoors and outdoors, while Italian brick paving physically connects the home to an outdoor patio. Bookending the volume are the bedrooms, granted privacy by custom-stained red cedar siding.
The home’s exterior, clad in cedar with a silvery wash, sets the tone for a nuanced interplay of light and shadow that is cast throughout the interiors. Natural light streams in through a glazed roof and a row of clerestory windows that flank the hallway.
Verticality, adopted in the windows, doors, and wall panels, is a recurring theme throughout the dwelling. This is counterpointed by the horizontal grain of the kitchen cabinetry for balance, creating a visual harmony that integrates the home with its natural setting.
“Like a poem or a piece of music, the house bears subtleties—shifts and gradations in texture, color, and rhythm—that can only be fully appreciated over time,” says HGX Design. Take a tour of the residence through the images below.
