When it comes to music, there’s always room for reinvention, and that goes for the instruments themselves too. Keen on combining their love for music and design, Melbourne artists, musicians and brothers Henry and Jack Madin have launched Hundo Instruments, a range of intuitive, handcrafted instruments made from Tasmanian oak wood and pine.
Looking more like Scandinavian kitchenware than a drum pad, the Hundo Basic hooks up to a laptop and an app, each of the four plates summoning a programmed sound, beat or chord. The Hundo Marimba – an acoustic nine-bar – is as minimalist-looking as the Basic, with interchangeable keys that’ll let you improvise to your heart’s content. Throw in a pair of Hundo Mallets, and you’ve got yourself a handsome design-conscious musical set-up.
