Standing out from the surrounding typical suburban homes in this Kuala Lumpur neighbourhood is the Bewboc House, designed by Malaysian architect Fabian Tan for a couple seeking a unique, functional and simple intervention in their existing home.
The extension completed by Tan is a grey concrete vaulted annex angled towards the corner garden, its arched structure accommodating two levels. Intended for socialising and relaxation, the living room and dining area on the ground floor can completely open up to the exterior via two large pivoting doors. Its impressive double height volume becomes more pronounced by two mezzanine platforms: one housing a study that overlooks the living area below, and another open-air terrace straddling the edge of the annex, accessed exclusively from the master bedroom. Half-moon shaped openings were worked into the upper concrete structure, ensuring a maximum of light in the home at all times of the day. Inventive and atypical, Tan’s Bewboc House is a jolt of excitement in the otherwise conventional fabric of suburbia. More projects by Tan on his website.
