You tend to find the properties of hotelier and entrepreneur Ian Schrager in the swankier, hipper neighborhoods of cities like New York, Los Angeles, and London; changing things up, his new hotel stays off-piste. The first Mexico outpost of the Edition chain of luxury hotels has arrived in Riviera Maya, located midway between Cancun and Tulum in Kania, in the middle of a 620-acre nature reserve complete with spider monkeys, iguanas, and anteaters.
The tropical location inspired the design, with plenty of bamboo, wicker, and wood used throughout the interior to integrate the property with its jungle surroundings. The desire to create a luxe property that felt at one with the environment was a major influence on the project, perfectly characterized by the giant, oversized lagoon-inspired pool, which seems almost to spill into the sea.
The rooms here are standard luxury fare, styled in wellness-leaning neutrals with grand four-poster beds and large windows that welcome a view of vibrant greens and blues from the lush landscaping, sea, and sky. The property sits at the edge of the water, edged by two miles of white sand beachfront within a dense mangrove forest. Inside, interiors draw inspiration from the Yucatan Peninsula, with local materials like limestone, bamboo, and wood incorporated both structurally and aesthetically. At the center of the property is a wild, twisting bamboo structure, part sculptural installation, part pavilion, which is used for outdoor events and daily yoga.
