New York-based photographer David Rothenberg captures the surreal goings on above a Queens neighbourhood with some serious sky traffic in his series Landing Lights Park. Focusing on the suburban East Elmshurt neighbourhood, Rothenberg was drawn to the area by the roaring sounds of jumbo jets that provide a rumbling soundtrack to the leafy district. Taking off and landing at the nearby La Guardia airport, the planes represent an awkward bedfellow for the community, lurching into view at startlingly low altitudes that keep the locals on their toes.
Dwarfing the quiet blocks filled with an eclectic array of modest homes, Rothenberg’s shots juxtapose the planes with their suburban surroundings, highlighting the peculiar nature of the iron giants gate-crashing the neighbourhood.
