Singapore Blue by artist and educator Hans Tan is inspired by the milky white porcelain ware decorated with iridescent blue patterns, a familiar object in Asian, Middle Eastern and European cultures that represent a certain period in history.
In this project, Tan urges Singaporeans to embody their own cultural identity in the form of this blue-and-white icon. By creating a blank porcelain vase that comes with a blue, erasable marker pen, he urges Singaporeans to create their own bona fide version of the vase: transitory, impermanent and evolving, the perfect metaphor for a young nation with a resilient and pliable identity.
