Coney Island is one of my favorite NYC summer spots because it’s all about excess: excess eating, excess sunning and excess thrill-seeking. That’s why I also like to keep my trips there short — just enough time to absorb the chaotic charm and seedy underbelly of the place before hopping on the subway back to civilization. Here’s how to get a nice taste of “America’s Playground” in just two well-timed hours.

Hotdog at Nathan’s Famous (20 minutes): Your first stop is Nathan’s Famous, feeding Coney Island’s joy-seekers since 1916. You can’t go wrong with a classic chili cheese dog and a side of fries, but everything from lobster rolls to deep-fried frog legs are on the menu too. The giant billboard out front counts down to next year’s hotdog eating competition, put on by Nathan’s every Fourth of July.

Coney Island USA Bar (30 minutes): You’re thirsty after all that salt and grease, so grab a cold brew at the colorful bar inside Coney Island USA. The selection and pricing are among the area’s best, and you can hear oohs and ahhs from the sideshow housed in the same building. The museum upstairs is worth a gander if you have an extra $5 and 15 minutes to spare.

Boardwalk Jaunt (10 minutes): Now that you’re fed and imbibed, you’re ready to brave the masses on the boardwalk. Head toward the aquarium as you take in the salty air, loud music and screaming children. Every weekend you’ll find a group of free-spirited dancers hosting a mini dance party next to the W 8th Street entrance. Join in for a quick boogie and feel the love.

Aquarium Visit (45 minutes): Escape the hustle and bustle at the NYC Aquarium. Superstorm Sandy took a significant toll, but it remains open while renovations continue. Cool down with some penguins and marvel at the tanks of bright tropical fish.

Cyclone Ride (15 minutes): The last and best stop is a ride on The Cyclone. Built in 1927, this wooden rollercoaster jerks riders to and fro in a way that’s far scarier than modern-day roller coasters.
